Project Scope: Visual Identity, Concept Development, Signage System, Space Design & Marketing Materials.

Everywhere and Nowhere in Between is a joint exhibition of photographs taken by Malia James (Dum Dum Girls) and Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) while on the road with their respective bands. The exhibition consists of one hundred images-city selected by each artist-and on view at Space Pomona.

My work consisted of graphic and industrial designs for all thematic zones of the exhibition. I created the visual language of the exhibition, which included: choosing the typefaces, creating typography layouts and choosing finishing materials.

Malia James is a photographer, director, and musician. She plays bass in the California-based Dum Dum Girls and has directed music videos for the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Surfer Blood, Valerie June, and Adam Green. With commercial clients ranging from Marlboro to Converse, her images have appeared on album covers and in books and magazines worldwide.

Nick Zinner plays guitar in the three-time Grammy-nominated rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs. He has also collaborated and/or performed with Bright Eyes, TV on the Radio, Damon Albarn, Santigold, and more. In 2011, Nick composed the orchestral piece 41 Strings in commemoration of the 41st Earth Day, and has contributed to a number of film soundtracks, including co-writing the Grammy-nominated title song “All Is Love” for Where the Wild Things Are (2009).

Nick studied photography at Bard College with Larry Fink and Steven Shore, and has published his work in four books, most recently Please Take Me Off the Guest List (Akashic). His photographs have also appeared in The New York Times, Vice, and Rolling Stone, as well as in exhibitions around the world, including solo shows in Tokyo, Berlin, London, New York, San Francisco, and Mexico City.

Barraged with information, hellos, goodbyes, I love yous, and never agains – a parade of hotels, motels, gas stations and stages, underwear washed in truck stop sinks, and airport lounges transformed into sleep chambers – these photographs represent both the frenetic nature of life on the road and the quiet moments in between, rare moments in a tornado.

The work in this show is priced intentionally low to afford everyone the opportunity to partake in the other side of tour life, the side only the band sees.
